DEVELOPMENT (REFLECTION ON KEY CONCEPTS)
What were the most important
concepts you learned in this module?
This module explores the integration of AI
in English Language Teaching (ELT), focusing on how technology can enrich
learning through personalized, interactive tools. Central to this approach is
Read Theory, which uses reader-response theory to engage students with texts
and foster critical thinking. Reading Coach tailors leveled reading passages to
fit learners’ abilities and interests, while Reading Progress supports
extensive reading practices customized for individual needs. ZenoChat serves as
an AI companion to enhance conversational English, vocabulary, and
comprehension. ELSA Speak provides AI-driven pronunciation feedback, accent
training, and vocabulary building, utilizing engaging games to enhance learning
effectiveness. Grammarly offers real-time grammar and writing support, refining
students' writing skills. The module also examines the potential of developing
a learning assistant bot on the Poe platform, demonstrating how AI can
transform traditional language education into more personalized and effective
learning experiences.
How did these concepts
challenge your previous understanding of English
language teaching?
These
concepts have transformed my understanding of English language teaching by
showcasing AI’s potential to revolutionize the classroom. Traditionally, ELT
relied on a standardized, one-size-fits-all approach with teacher-led
instruction. However, AI tools such as Read Theory, Reading Coach, and Reading
Progress provide personalized learning experiences that adapt to each student’s
level and interests, increasing engagement and motivation. AI companions like
ZenoChat for conversational practice and ELSA Speak for pronunciation offer
instant, precise feedback previously available only through one-on-one
tutoring. Grammarly improves writing skills with real-time corrections,
surpassing traditional methods. The prospect of developing a personalized
learning assistant on platforms like Poe further emphasizes the shift from
generalized teaching to a more tailored, student-centered approach. These
advancements demonstrate how technology can address gaps in conventional
methods, offering innovative, individualized ways to teach and learn English.
How do you plan to apply these concepts in
your future teaching?
I plan to integrate these AI concepts into
my teaching to offer a more personalized and engaging learning experience. I
would use Read Theory to help students interact with texts and enhance their
critical thinking through reader-response activities. With Reading Coach, I would
provide leveled passages and stories tailored to students' abilities and
interests, keeping them motivated and tracking their progress. Reading Progress
will support extensive reading by customizing materials to individual needs and
encouraging regular reading habits. ZenoChat will be used for conversational
practice, improving speaking and comprehension through interactive dialogues.
For pronunciation and accent training. Also, I would employ ELSA Speak’s
AI-driven feedback to refine spoken English. Grammarly would assist in
enhancing writing skills with real-time grammar and style corrections.
Additionally, I’ll explore creating a personalized learning assistant on the
Poe platform to offer an adaptable and interactive learning experience.
Integrating these AI tools aims to foster a dynamic, student-centered learning
environment.
